About

South Shore Medical Center offers Shape Your Future, a comprehensive healthy lifestyle and nutrition program for our current pediatric patients and their family. Our team is made up of pediatricians, a pediatric nurse practitioner, a pediatric dietitian and a exercise physiologist. We believe that a healthy lifestyle increases energy and self-esteem as well as preventing illness and disease such as obesity, diabetes and high cholesterol in the future. We achieve this in a variety of ways. For those that are patients of South Shore Medical Center, we offer a stepwise approach to healthy eating habits and lifestyle changes, beginning with individual appointments to set specific goals for your child and family.

During the initial individual appointment, with our pediatric nurse practitioner or pediatric dietitian, your child (and family) will be given behavior change goals that focus on nutrition and activity. For most families, simple goal setting and basic changes can make a huge difference in achieving a healthy lifestyle.

Another option is this website. We provide “lectures” on a variety of nutritional topics such as label reading, fat, sugar, portion distortion and picky eating. These presentations can be viewed in the comfort and privacy of your own home and will help you educate yourself and your family about how to make healthier choices.

Reading the lectures and if you are a SSMC patient seeing the practitioners here in the Wellness center will all help you and your family on their journey to a healthier lifestyle.

During clinic appointments we work on these areas:

Nutrition

Your child (and you of course!) will attend 1:1 appointments with either our pediatric nurse practitioner or pediatric dietitian and set individual and family goals.

Behavior

You will learn how to overcome barriers, set goals, and deal with challenges. For patients of SSMC there are always 1:1 appointments available to help with individual/family concerns.

Maintenance

If you are participating in the 1:1 appointments at SSMC then we recommend just “checking in” every 3-6 months to make sure your family stays on track with their lifestyle changes. For those that are participating on the online “lectures,” come back to the site as often as you like for new ideas, recipes, and continued support and motivation!

Appointments are currently only available to South Shore Medical Center patients.
