Weight Stigma and Discrimination in Children

In the United States, where almost two-thirds of the population is overweight or obese, you’d think that people would be more sensitive to those who struggle with their weight. But unfortunately, discrimination of obese people continues and can have lasting impacts on physical and emotional health. And this poor treatment begins early. One study published in the journal Pediatrics found that obese children are 65% more likely to be bullied than their normal weight peers. Thinking that your child may be taunted or teased at school because of their weight is heart-breaking; no parent wants their child to be made fun of or humiliated.
